Tourist information
Palmas has no tourist information office. General information is available at your hotel. An other option is to visit one of the travel agencies in Palmas.
Some book stands sell little books about Tocantins, but these will be in Portuguese. Maps are very hard to find, except for a city map, available at the hotels. If you book at one of the more expensive hotels, you can expect to get some touristic information at the desk. At least they will have a city map for you.
If you want information about the region around Palmas, you could talk to CATUR (Centro de Atendimento ao Turista). They have an office at the Cesamar Park and can arrange a guide for you. We recommend you to hire a guide. These guys are trained well and know the area. Best is to make an appointment for the next day, so you can set off early while it is still cool. Prices are moderate.
If you want printed information, then visit the government departments called ‘Secretarias’ in Palmas center, e.g. Turismo, Communicação, Seplan or Cultura. At these places you will receive various leaflets, dvd´s and CDroms. Try to locate the IBGE in Palmas, at this institute you can buy maps. Some travel agencies in Palmas can help you with organised trips. See below.
Travel agencies
Some travel agencies can book you for organised trips to Jalapão or Cantão. Brazilians book hotels and pousadas at their travel agency, and much less via the internet.
These trips are only organised now and then, so check the agencies well in advance. The trips can be canceled, when the agency does not find enough participants.
