Gurupi

History
The story of Gurupi started precisely in 1932, when Benjamim Rodrigues arrives at the place. At first, the region was inhabited by Xerentes Indians, which were slowly moving away from the place as a result of the presence of the first explorers who came to the region attracted by the discovery of crystal and with the possibility to create farmland and agricultural production. In the ’50s, the city had a developmental momentum with administrative and political emancipation and the arrival of Belém-Brasília highway (BR-153). Soon, the progress of Gurupi was accelerated, turning it into an important industrial and commercial hub of the south / southeast of Tocantins. Gurupi is considered the south gate entrance of Tocantins linking the state to big cities in the south.
The name Gurupi means Pure Diamond in the Xerente language.

Economic activities
The predominant economic activities in Gurupi are agriculture and livestock, the latter being the most significant. The county is the largest producer of cattle in the state. Another prominent activity is the retail sector. The city has a good infrastructure, communication and health care.

Agropecuária
The event takes place annually in June in Parque Agropecuário Antônio Lisboa da Cruz. The exhibition lasts a week and features attractions such as rodeos, rodeos, art shows and booths with samples of products manufactured and marketed in the region and latest technology equipment.

FENEG
Business Fair of Micro and Small Enterprises in Gurupi. Happens every year. Presents the industrial and commercial potential of the region. It is organized by Sebrae / Tocantins.

Carnival
It is the most celebrated carnival in the state. It attracts many tourists, with animations in the streets and clubs. The city has two samba schools and several street blocks. The parade of schools and the blocks take place on the first and third day of the carnival party.

Jacaré beach
The Jacaré Beach has one of the most beautiful natural resources of the state: its sands are clear, shallow water and lots of peace, for being one of the last untapped reserves of Rio Tocantins. Suitable for camping during the season and the place for concerts, sports tournaments and dances. It is 86 km from the city. Access is via a good country road.

Folklore
There are dozens of artisans who produce works ranging from the manufacture of rustic pieces of wood and straw handicrafts to industrial products. The main dish tasted in the city is the grilled fish with a basis of coconut milk, lots of vegetables and spicy sauce. The Gurupi folklore is filled with stories, superstitions, prayers, blessed and challenges. Cultural activities in the city are significant. The city has three theater groups and cultural weeks are held regularly involving the various fields of art.
The religious festival is celebrated in the city on June 13 in honor of Saint Anthony, patron saint of the city.
